President Joyce Banda says it is time Malawians debated on the issue of dual citizenship.

The President said this on Tuesday in Geneva, Switzerland, when she met Malawians living in that country.

“This is a legal issue and Joyce Banda cannot make laws,” she told Malawians who comprised academics, diplomats at the United Nations in Geneva as well as those working and studying in Switzerland.

She then asked Malawians to debate the issue among themselves.

The President used the occasion to brief Malawians in Geneva about developments taking place in Malawi.

She said she undertook tough decisions to put Malawi’s economy back on track. Banda said she was happy that the plans are now yielding fruits and cited the reduction of fuel and some basic commodity prices as fruits of the Economic Recovery Plan her administration has put in place.

The President also briefed the gathering about some new development projects taking place in Malawi such as the Kachaso-Nkaya rail link being constructed by Vale, the completion of Masauko Chipembere Highway phase two, the construction of the Chikhwawa -Nsanje, Thekerani and Phalombe roads to bitumen standards.

Earlier, Lester Chitsulo, who spoke on behalf of all Malawians living in Switzerland, said their children should not lose their birthright as Malawi citizens just because of their parents’ decisions to stay abroad, hence asked the President to look into the issue of dual citizenship.

He said as Malawians living in the diaspora, they are willing to assist different sectors to develop the country.
